Our Story

Chicago's Favorite Since 1948

About Us

European tradition,
Chicago kitchen.

Walk in the door and come face to face with a cornucopia of delicious, delectable and enticing treats. Lutz offers an amazing selection of cakes, tarts, tortes, cookies and chocolates all created using traditional European recipes that have been in the Lutz family for centuries. Staying true to it's Konditorei distinction, Lutz pastries are made from the highest quality ingredients to create unique flavors that are light and delicate. From seasonal specialties like Christ-Stollen and Baumkuchen to whimsical hand-made marzipan treats, the variety is endless.

Heritage

Three generations, one bakery.

1948

A bakery is born.

Master baker Hans Lutz opens the doors on Montrose Avenue, bringing Konditorei tradition to Lincoln Square.

1962

The strawberry cake.

Real berries, fresh whipped cream, butter sponge — a recipe Chicago would never let go of.

1984

Tiered & wedded.

Hand-piped wedding cakes become a Chicago wedding standard, from Lake Forest to Hyde Park.

2007

Tribune Top 10.

Named to the Chicago Tribune's list of essential bakeries — a recognition we still keep on the wall.

Today

Still made by hand.

Three generations later. Same ovens, same recipes, same six o'clock start.
